This imbalance also destabilizes broader society by driving up crime, human trafficking, and economic strain. A large population of young, unattached men with low socioeconomic prospects historically correlates with spikes in violent crime, gambling, and substance abuse. To meet the demand for brides, black markets for human trafficking have surged, forcibly importing women from poorer neighboring regions and forcing them into marriages.
