Most people know the story of ancient Egypt.
Far fewer know about the African kingdom to the south that became powerful enough to conquer it.
The Kingdom of Kush rose along the Nile in what is now Sudan. By the eighth century BCE, Kushite king Piye expanded north into Egypt, helping establish Egypt’s 25th Dynasty. For generations, Kushite rulers governed as pharaohs, including some of the most famous names of the period such as Piye and Taharqa.
Today, these rulers are often remembered as the **Black Pharaohs**.
But Kush was much more than a kingdom that once controlled Egypt. It developed powerful cities, monumental architecture, trade networks, its own royal traditions, and later flourished around Meroë for centuries.
In this episode of **Unfiltered Atlas**, we explore the rise of Kush, its conquest of Egypt, the rulers who became pharaohs, and why this extraordinary African civilization is still missing from so many conversations about the ancient world.
This is not a side story to Egyptian history.
It is African history.
