Sam Worthington returns as Jake Sully. He has been a battle-hardened warrior and is now leading his family into the previously unknown regions of Pandora’s polar area after Kiri (Sigourney Weaver) experiences visions of Eywa. These visions grow stronger and more dangerous for Kiri as time goes on. As a reluctant legend, Sam Worthington gives intensity to Jake's weathered appearance as he tries to protect his family from the ever-present threats to their safety no matter where they go. Zoe Saldaña returns as Neytiri. Her role is filled with grief over all of the losses her family has endured. Her fierce and protective nature creates a warrior who will never give up another inch of Pandora to those who see it as nothing but a resource to be exploited instead of a living world that deserves respect. In this movie the children of the Sully family form unlikely relationships — Britain Dalton's Lo’ak forms a relationship with the red-skinned Vul’kan Red Skin Na’vi of the frozen tundra, while Trinity Bliss's Tuk forms a relationship with the white-skinned Tsyokx White Skin Na’vi of the ancient glacier cities — forming alliances between different clans due to the shared threats they face.
Arnold Schwarzenegger joins the cast as General Victor Harrow. As the military leader of the ARES initiative, Arnold Schwarzenegger brings the same sense of confidence and conviction that he always does to the role of the antagonist. In this case, Victor Harrow is convinced that the only way humanity can survive is to destroy anything and everything that stands in its way, including Pandora. Jennifer Lawrence plays Lieutenant Zara Kane. She starts out as loyal soldier, but as she sees firsthand the devastation caused by the ARES initiative, she begins to question whether or not following orders truly is the right thing to do. Her internal struggle creates an interesting arc as a character who becomes aware that following orders can sometimes mean becoming the very monster she once believed she was fighting against. Stephen Lang is back as Colonel Miles Quaritch. However, this time around, he appears in the frozen wilderness of Pandora. He is a clanless Na'vi who has been reborn from the memories of a long-dead soldier, and as such, walks the thin line between being an enemy and an ally, because he doesn’t really fit into either of the two worlds that created him or is slowly taking him over. Through science fiction spectacle, the film explores themes of identity and belonging, and asks viewers how much they would be willing to sacrifice to protect the things you love when the choices we make in order to survive can change us so fundamentally that we may lose ourselves in the process.
Visually, the film should be stunning. It will showcase Pandora's polar ecosystems through breathtaking visualizations of bioluminescent ice formations and other new Na'vi clans. There will also be volcanic eruptions that threaten the entire population of Pandora, causing temporary alliances to be formed in order to try to prevent a catastrophe. The emotional weight of the film comes from the fact that the characters have to decide between their principles and what they know is the practical decision to make in order to survive, especially since the catastrophic event that threatens to destroy Pandora isn’t going to care about which side you are fighting for.
